The Value Added Job

Companies are beginning to understand that it is no longer acceptable to expect employees to be grateful to simply have a job.

Employment levels are at an all time low and skills shortages have become more widespread. Lack of staff retention affects the bottom line. This has spawned the ‘value added job’, where just paying for the work staff have done is simply not enough. People like to feel involved, a sense of achievement and belonging to the company.

Research from the CIPD shows the average cost of turnover per employee is £8,200, rising to £12,000.  Undoubtedly, there are people reading this and viewing those figures with envy, where some companies have costs of £50,000 and upwards for individual staff members.

Not surprisingly, businesses throughout the UK are looking for innovative and cost-effective solutions to drive motivation and reduce problems like absenteeism. There are ways in which the company can implement staff approval systems, and events can play a major part in this policy.

Leading companies have experienced for themselves the power and benefits of hosting fun events for staff; they feel rewarded, thanked for their hard work and nearly all take the opportunity to get to know each other on a different level, increasing the bond between them.  This in turn makes managers’ lives easier, improving staff retention at all levels.

Well-managed events have a major impact on morale, staff retention, communication and provide the elusive impression of a ‘value added job’.  Events don’t have to be expensive or for large numbers; a go karting evening for a team of warehouse operators can cost less than a evening of wine and dining, or you could go all-out with a rewarding management trip to Barcelona; all kinds of events contribute to communication and the sense of value that larger companies have such a hard time conveying.

The impact of events can resonate far beyond the immediacy of the shop floor.  If you heard of a competitor hosting a large celebration party, what message is that sending to your staff?  Ensure it’s your competitors hearing about you partying hard, and they will wonder what you have to party about.
