Chicago is a story about "murder, greed, corruption, violence, exploitation, adultery and treachery - all those things we hold near and dear to our hearts." Creators John Kander, Fred Ebb and Bob Fosse never back off from their bold and sinister promise, delivering a sensational musical production which has been wowing audiences in London's West End since November 18, 1997.
The show is the tale of Roxie Hart, a chorus girl who kills her lover as a career move, Billy Flynn, a sharp lawyer who turns Roxie into a celebrity; and Velma Kelly, a dancing jailbird with an ear for headlines and an eye for talent. Chicago, winner of six 1997 Tony Awards, including Best Musical Revival, is a loving look back at vaudeville, a timely satire of the justice system, and a reminder of what great theater can be.
The original cast of the production included Ute Lemper as Velma, Ruthie Henshall as Roxie Hart, Nigel Planer as Amos Hart and Henry Goodman as Billy Flynn. The production won the 1998 Olivier Award for Outstanding Musical.
The show ran at the Adelphi Theatre for 9 years until transferring to the Cambridge Theatre in April 2006.
